Pethidine is a pain relieving medicine. It effectively alleviates moderate to severe pain.

Product Description:

Pethidine — meperidine in the United States — is a synthetic mu opioid agonist used for moderate to severe pain. At 25 mg per millilitre it is a low-concentration ampoule, suited to careful titration and to the small doses used for shivering and rigors rather than to high-dose analgesia.

Its use has narrowed because of its metabolite. Normeperidine has no analgesic activity, a long half-life and neurotoxic effects, causing tremor, twitching, agitation and seizures when it accumulates with repeated dosing, in renal impairment or in older patients; naloxone does not reverse it and may make it worse. Guidelines therefore advise against pethidine for routine or repeated pain control, favouring morphine or fentanyl. It retains a place in obstetric analgesia in some countries, in treating post-anaesthetic shivering, and in rigors from drug or transfusion reactions, where single low doses work well. It must not be given with MAO inhibitors.
