Eperisone is a centrally acting muscle relaxant that works in two ways: it dampens the gamma motor neuron activity that keeps muscle spindles taut, reducing tone, and it dilates blood vessels, improving blood flow to muscle. Painful spasm reduces local circulation, which causes more pain, and improving flow is intended to break that cycle. Its distinguishing practical feature is that it causes much less sedation than tizanidine or baclofen.

It is used for muscle stiffness and spasm in musculoskeletal conditions such as low back pain and neck pain, and for spasticity from cerebrovascular disease, cerebral palsy and spinal cord disorders. Being non-sedating, it suits patients who must work or drive, though drowsiness can still occur. Adverse effects are usually mild — rash, nausea, weakness, dizziness. Rare serious reactions including anaphylaxis and liver injury have been reported.

Sourcing notes. A Japanese-origin product registered in Japan, India, and parts of Asia and Latin America, but not in the US or Europe. India is the main generic manufacturing source and competition is strong. Registration in the destination market is the first question, since a regulator with no local reference product will expect a full dossier.
