Product Description:
Etofenamate is a fenamate NSAID used topically. Applied to the skin it inhibits COX locally and reaches concentrations in underlying tissue high enough to act there, while systemic absorption stays low — typically a small fraction of what an equivalent oral dose would produce. That is the point of topical NSAIDs: local anti-inflammatory effect with far less risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or kidney injury.
It is used for localised musculoskeletal pain — sprains, strains, tendinitis, bursitis, and the symptoms of osteoarthritis in superficial joints such as the knee and hand. Guidelines increasingly recommend topical NSAIDs before oral ones in knee and hand osteoarthritis, particularly in older patients, and etofenamate is a common choice in the markets that register it. Local skin reactions — redness, itching, rash — are the usual adverse effects, and photosensitivity can occur, so treated skin should be kept out of strong sunlight. It should not be applied to broken skin or used under occlusive dressings.
Sourcing notes. Registered in Germany, Austria, Turkey, Spain and several other European and Latin American markets, but not in the US or UK. Gel, cream and spray are separate registrations, and the vehicle affects penetration, so formulation data matters.
