Supplying Medicines and Supplements to Saudi Arabia
A practical guide for Saudi agents, distributors and hospital buyers who source from abroad, and for manufacturers and exporters worldwide selling into the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia is the largest pharmaceutical market in the Gulf and one of the most organised. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) is a demanding regulator, public buying is centralised through NUPCO, and the government is actively building local manufacturing.
For foreign manufacturers, that means two things. Finished generics need patience: the plant must be cleared by the SFDA and the product registered through the standard route. And the bigger, growing opportunity is often supply to local plants: APIs, bulk and technology transfer.
Saudi Arabia at a glance
| Regulator | Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) |
|---|---|
| Who holds the registration | A Saudi agent licensed by the Ministry of Commerce, with a Saudi-based pharmacovigilance officer; the marketing authorisation holder must own the product or be linked to an SFDA-registered site |
| Plant requirement | Every manufacturing site needs SFDA GMP clearance, and the plant is usually inspected |
| Fast routes | 30 and 60 working-day routes relying on FDA or EMA approval, for new medicines and biologicals only, not generics |
| Public buyer | NUPCO, through a Saudi entity; local products get a 10% price preference in government tenders |
How to supply medicines to Saudi Arabia
- Appoint your Saudi agent. Foreign product owners cannot file directly. A licensed Saudi agent and a Saudi-based pharmacovigilance officer are needed. A pure trading company does not qualify as marketing authorisation holder.
- Get the plant cleared. The SFDA registers the manufacturing site and usually inspects it. A WHO-GMP certificate alone is not enough, so budget for the inspection and have the site ready.
- Register the product. Generics follow the standard route, with prices set under the SFDA's pricing rules as part of approval. The Gulf Health Council's shared registration can open the other Gulf markets.
- Supply and tenders. NUPCO buys for the public health sector. Supplier registration needs a Saudi commercial registration, so foreign firms bid through a Saudi entity.
For medicines not registered in Saudi Arabia, special import routes exist for hospitals and individual patients. We can help source these from manufacturers worldwide through our named-patient service. See named-patient and special import and government tender supply.
Supplements
The SFDA decides whether a product is a food, a health product or a medicine, and supplements usually need SFDA registration or listing before sale. Labels must be in Arabic, and halal status matters. We help brands get supplements made under their own label by GMP-certified contract manufacturers: see nutraceutical private label.
What people in Saudi Arabia search for
Semrush data from October 2026 shows that people in Saudi Arabia search mostly in Arabic. Vitamin D is the biggest supplement search by far (about 74,000 searches a month for فيتامين د, plus 90,500 for a common spelling variant), followed by protein, vitamin C, collagen, B12 and effervescent tablets (فوار, 18,100 a month).
Saudis search mostly in Arabic script, and spelling matters: “فيتامين دال” gets about 90,500 searches a month and “فيتامين د” about 74,000, followed by “بروتين” (protein, 60,500), “فيتامين سي” (49,500), “كولاجين” (collagen, 40,500), and “مكملات غذائية” (food supplements) and “فيتامين B12” (27,100 each) (Semrush, October 2026). Some English terms are used too, such as “vitamin d” and “omega 3” (14,800 each), and medicines are often searched by their English generic name, such as “cetirizine” (about 4,430) and “amlodipine” (3,010).
How importers and distributors in Saudi Arabia search
Across the Arabic-speaking markets that Google Keyword Planner combines, Saudi Arabia among them, “شركات الادوية” (pharmaceutical companies) sits between 1,000 and 10,000 monthly searches, and “مستودع ادوية” (medicine warehouse), “مصنع ادوية” (medicine factory) and the English “pharmaceutical companies in saudi arabia” between 100 and 1,000. English “private label” searches get about 170 a month (Semrush, October 2026).
Originator brands are searched by name, sometimes in Arabic script: “ريبلسس” for Rybelsus (oral semaglutide) gets about 12,100 searches a month, and Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Primolut N (norethisterone), Ozempic (semaglutide), Daflon (diosmin and hesperidin) and Buscopan (hyoscine butylbromide) are searched too. Brand names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify the medicine.
Supplements we can help you make
Among medicines, the most searched include allergy treatments, blood-pressure and diabetes medicines, and the GLP-1 weight-loss medicines.
