Supplying Medicines and Supplements to Ghana
A practical guide for Ghanaian importers, wholesalers and hospital buyers who source from abroad, and for manufacturers and exporters worldwide selling into Ghana.
Ghana's Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has operated at WHO maturity level 3 since 2020, and it runs one of West Africa's clearer registration systems, with a reliance route for products already assessed by trusted regulators.
The rule to check first: the FDA reserves around two dozen formulations for local manufacturers, including amoxicillin, paracetamol, metronidazole, ibuprofen and lisinopril. Check the list before you file.
Ghana at a glance
| Regulator | Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), WHO maturity level 3 since 2020 |
|---|---|
| Who applies | One local representative: a Ghanaian company with a wholesale licence authorised to import |
| Registration | A CTD dossier; full review takes about 180 days, and a reliance route uses the reference regulator's assessment reports |
| Foreign plants | Only products made at sites the FDA has found GMP-compliant can be registered |
| Watch out for | Formulations reserved for local manufacturers, and one-year import permits |
How to supply medicines to Ghana
- Appoint a local representative. A Ghanaian company with a wholesale licence, authorised to import, represents you with the FDA.
- Clear the plant's GMP. The FDA must find the site GMP-compliant. Have your GMP evidence and inspection history ready.
- Register the product. A CTD dossier with a CoPP. Use the reliance route if a trusted regulator has assessed the product.
- Supply. Only registered products can be imported, under a one-year import permit. Public buying uses framework contracts through the Central Medical Stores and Ghana Health Service, and reimbursement follows the NHIS Medicines List.
A September 2025 guideline lets doctors import unregistered biologicals and vaccines for named patients, up to three months' supply. See named-patient and special import and government tender supply.
Supplements
The Ghana FDA also regulates food supplements, which must be registered before they are sold. We help brands get supplements made under their own label by GMP-certified contract manufacturers: see nutraceutical private label.
What people in Ghana search for
Semrush data from October 2026 shows that people in Ghana search most for vitamin C and collagen (about 6,600 searches a month each), then vitamin D, vitamin E, B12 and magnesium. Among medicines, cetirizine, zinc, dexamethasone, ceftriaxone and diclofenac lead.
Ghanaians search in English. Besides vitamin C, collagen, vitamin D and B12, they type “collagen supplements” (about 2,900 a month), “vitamin b complex” (1,900) and “magnesium supplement” (1,600), and for medicines “fluconazole” (1,630), “folic acid” (1,370) and “hydrocortisone” (1,000) (Semrush, October 2026).
How importers and distributors in Ghana search
Trade buyers often add the country name, as in “pharmaceutical wholesalers in ghana”, “wholesale pharmacies in ghana” and “medical suppliers in ghana” (about 30 a month each), while “drug manufacturing process” gets about 70 (Semrush, October 2026).
Originator brands searched by name include Buscopan (hyoscine butylbromide), Piriton (chlorphenamine), Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Primolut N (norethisterone) and Flagyl (metronidazole). Brand names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to identify the medicine.
Supplements we can help you make
