Supplying Medicines and Supplements to El Salvador

A practical guide for Salvadoran importers, distributors and hospital buyers who source from abroad, and for manufacturers and exporters worldwide selling into El Salvador.

This page in other languages: English · Español

El Salvador has a new regulator, the Superintendencia de Regulación Sanitaria (SRS), which replaced the DNM in 2023. The law lets the SRS formally recognise decisions of reference agencies, and its predecessor relied on the EMA, FDA, Health Canada, INVIMA and COFEPRIS.

It's also one of the quickest places to use Central American mutual recognition, at about 10 business days. On the buying side, the health ministry and the social security institute buy jointly, US$121.6 million for 2026, and also through COMISCA.

How to supply medicines to El Salvador

  1. Arrange local representation. A Salvadoran representative holds the registration with the SRS.
  2. Pick the route. A registration in another Central American country can be recognised in about 10 business days. Approval by a reference agency supports a reliance review. Otherwise, use the standard route.
  3. Prepare the dossier. A CTD dossier with a CoPP and the plant's GMP evidence.
  4. Supply. Private distributors and pharmacies, or the joint public purchases and COMISCA.

The medicines law allows patient-specific import when a medicine isn't available. See named-patient and special import and government tender supply.

Supplements

Supplements are registered with the SRS, which regulates foods, medicines and other health products, and El Salvador has a technical regulation on supplement and probiotic labelling. We help brands get supplements made under their own label by GMP-certified contract manufacturers: see nutraceutical private label.
