Product Description:
Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) gives young children a full course of antimalarials once a month during the rainy season, when most malaria cases and deaths occur. The medicines used are sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and amodiaquine (AQ), supplied together in one blister so the right doses go to the right child.
A course is one SP dose plus amodiaquine on day 1, and amodiaquine alone on days 2 and 3, repeated monthly for four or five months. Two strengths cover children aged 3–11 months and 12–59 months. The tablets dissolve in water and taste acceptable to children. SMC has greatly reduced malaria in the Sahel, and WHO now allows it wherever malaria is seasonal.
Sourcing notes. SPAQ is made by a small number of manufacturers in China, India and Africa, and is bought in very large volumes before each season through Global Fund, PMI, UNICEF and campaign partners that require WHO prequalification. Orders are placed months ahead of the rains, so timing is critical. Store below 30 °C, protected from moisture.
