Product Description:

Primaquine is an 8-aminoquinoline antimalarial. Unlike most malaria medicines, it kills the dormant liver forms of Plasmodium vivax and P. ovale, which otherwise wake up and cause relapses months later. It also kills the mature sexual forms of P. falciparum that mosquitoes pick up, which stops the infection passing to others.

For vivax malaria it is given after the blood-stage treatment, usually daily for 7 or 14 days, to prevent relapse ("radical cure"). For falciparum malaria a single low dose is added in elimination programmes. Primaquine can break down red blood cells in people with G6PD deficiency, so G6PD testing is advised before the longer courses, and it is not used in pregnancy.
