Artesunate + amodiaquine (ASAQ) is an artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). Artesunate kills most malaria parasites within the first day, and amodiaquine, which lasts longer in the body, clears the remaining parasites. Using two medicines together protects both from resistance.
It treats uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in adults and children, given once a day for three days, with the tablet strength chosen by age or weight. It is widely used in West and Central Africa. Amodiaquine should not be used for malaria prevention in the same patient at the same time, and repeated courses are watched for effects on white blood cells and the liver.
Sourcing notes. ASAQ is made by several generic manufacturers and bought mainly through Global Fund, PMI and national malaria programmes, which require WHO prequalification or equivalent approval.
