Product Description:

This paediatric liquid combines nitazoxanide, a thiazolide antiprotozoal, with ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, at 125 mg and 50 mg per 5 mL as listed. Nitazoxanide disrupts an enzyme-dependent energy pathway in anaerobic protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium; ofloxacin blocks bacterial DNA gyrase. It is an antimicrobial combination, not a worm medicine. Nitazoxanide is almost insoluble in water, so the product is normally a powder for oral suspension or a ready-made suspension that is shaken before each dose, rather than a true solution.

It is prescribed in a few markets for diarrhoea and dysentery of suspected mixed protozoal and bacterial cause, a weak rationale in practice. WHO advice for acute diarrhoea in children centres on oral rehydration salts and zinc, with antibiotics only for bloody diarrhoea or suspected cholera, and no major regulator has approved this pairing. Fluoroquinolones are generally avoided in children because of joint and tendon concerns, and carry QT and seizure warnings. Antacids, iron and zinc reduce ofloxacin absorption.
