Product Description:
Ornidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent primarily used for the treatment of protozoal and anaerobic bacterial infections. It is effective against organisms such as Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Trichomonas vaginalis, making it widely used in conditions like amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and other anaerobic infections. Ornidazole works by penetrating microbial cells and disrupting their DNA structure, ultimately inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis and leading to cell death.
Chemically, Ornidazole is produced through an acid-catalyzed reaction between 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole and epichlorohydrin, resulting in a compound structurally related to other nitroimidazoles. It is often considered a chloro-derivative of secnidazole, sharing similar pharmacological properties but with improved tolerability and a longer duration of action.
Due to its broad-spectrum activity against anaerobic pathogens, Ornidazole is commonly prescribed alone or in combination with other antibiotics for gastrointestinal infections, gynecological conditions, and post-surgical prophylaxis. It should be used under medical supervision, with adherence to the prescribed dosage to ensure effectiveness and reduce the risk of resistance.
