Product Description:
Rifabutin is a semisynthetic antibiotic belonging to the rifamycin class, primarily used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and to prevent or manage Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections. It is particularly indicated for patients who cannot tolerate rifampin, such as those with HIV/AIDS receiving antiretroviral therapy. Rifabutin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, suppressing RNA synthesis, and ultimately preventing bacterial replication.
In the treatment of active tuberculosis, rifabutin is used in combination with other antimycobacterial medications to ensure effective bacterial clearance and to prevent resistance development. For latent tuberculosis, rifabutin may be administered as monotherapy in cases where exposure involves rifampin-resistant strains. Although rifampin has traditionally been used more widely due to its lower cost, rifabutin is now increasingly recommended as a first-line therapy, with prices becoming more comparable following patent expirations.
Rifabutin is available as oral capsules, commonly at 150 mg strength, and is used under medical supervision to monitor for potential side effects, including neutropenia, hepatotoxicity, and uveitis. Its ability to treat TB, prevent MAC infections, and serve as an alternative in patients on antiretroviral therapy makes rifabutin an essential antibiotic in modern infectious disease management.
