Product Description:

Secnidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole anti-infective related to metronidazole and tinidazole. Inside anaerobic bacteria and protozoa its nitro group is reduced to reactive products that damage DNA. A long half-life allows a full course in one dose. This page lists a 2 g dose as oral granules or tablets. Granules come in a single-dose sachet sprinkled on soft food, which helps people who struggle with large tablets; some markets use lower-strength tablets taken together.

In the US, the granules are approved as a single 2 g dose for bacterial vaginosis and for trichomoniasis in adults and adolescents, with sexual partners treated at the same time for trichomoniasis. Other markets also use secnidazole for amoebiasis and giardiasis. Granules are sprinkled onto applesauce, yoghurt or pudding and eaten within 30 minutes without chewing; they do not dissolve in drinks. Vulvovaginal candidiasis can follow. Related nitroimidazoles caused tumours in long-term rodent studies, so unnecessary use is avoided, and many labels advise against alcohol.

Sourcing notes. Secnidazole is a prescription-only medicine. Granules are moisture-sensitive and sit in laminated foil sachets; tablets go in blisters, both at room temperature. For tropical markets, ask for stability results at 30 °C and 75% relative humidity. Request a CoA for each batch with related substances, the GMP certificate, a CoPP and a CTD or ACTD dossier. Where the reference is granules, a generic tablet may need its own bioequivalence or clinical justification. State granules or tablets, strength per unit, units per pack and label language.
