Cefotaxime is a third-generation parenteral cephalosporin with broad Gram-negative activity and useful cover against streptococci, including penicillin-resistant pneumococci. It penetrates cerebrospinal fluid reliably, which makes it a first-line agent for bacterial meningitis, and it is widely used in community-acquired pneumonia, sepsis of unknown source and paediatric serious infection.
