Product Description:

Rifampicin is a cornerstone antituberculosis agent, inhibiting bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. It is bactericidal against actively dividing and semi-dormant mycobacteria, and its sterilising activity is what allowed tuberculosis treatment to shorten from eighteen months to six. It is used in every first-line TB regimen, in leprosy multidrug therapy, and for meningococcal and Haemophilus prophylaxis.

Two properties must be communicated to patients or adherence collapses. Rifampicin colours urine, sweat, tears and saliva orange-red — harmless, but genuinely alarming to an unwarned patient, and it permanently stains soft contact lenses. More consequentially, rifampicin is a potent inducer of cytochrome P450 enzymes and reduces the effect of a long list of drugs including hormonal contraceptives, warfarin, many antiretrovirals and most direct oral anticoagulants. Contraceptive failure on rifampicin is a recognised and avoidable problem.
