Product Description:

This fixed-dose tablet combines ofloxacin 200 mg with ornidazole 500 mg. Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Ornidazole is a nitroimidazole, related to metronidazole, active against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa such as Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia and Trichomonas. The pairing aims to cover mixed aerobic, anaerobic and protozoal infection with one film-coated tablet, usually taken twice daily.

It is prescribed in India and some other markets for infectious diarrhoea and dysentery of suspected mixed cause, pelvic infections, and some surgical and dental infections. Major regulators have not approved the pair, and ornidazole itself is not authorised in the United States. Fluoroquinolone warnings apply in full: tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, QT prolongation, blood glucose disturbance and photosensitivity. It is generally avoided in pregnancy and children. Antacids, iron and zinc are taken well apart from each dose, and stewardship guidance limits fluoroquinolone use.
