Product Description:
Methenamine, also known as hexamine or hexamethylenetetramine, is a urinary tract antiseptic widely used to prevent recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Unlike antibiotics, methenamine does not target bacteria directly and therefore carries no risk of developing bacterial resistance. It works by being converted in acidic urine to formaldehyde, a compound that has broad antibacterial activity in the urinary tract, helping reduce the risk of infection. Clinical studies have shown that methenamine can lower the incidence of UTIs by 44 to 86% and is considered non-inferior to low-dose prophylactic antibiotics in preventing recurrent infections.
Methenamine is administered orally and is available in both prescription and over-the-counter formulations, depending on the dose. Common brand names include Hiprex, Urex, and Urotropin. In addition to its role in UTI prevention, methenamine is also formulated topically for the treatment of hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating. Its safety profile and effectiveness as a non-antibiotic preventive therapy make it a valuable option for patients prone to recurrent urinary infections, providing a reliable alternative to long-term antibiotic use.
