Product Description:
Vancomycin is a tricyclic glycopeptide antibiotic widely used for the treatment of serious gram-positive bacterial infections. It is particularly effective against infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as well as methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). Vancomycin also demonstrates strong activity against other gram-positive organisms such as streptococci and enterococci, making it an important option in the management of severe and complicated infections.
The antibiotic works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to specific components of the bacterial cell wall, preventing proper formation of the cell wall structure and ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. Because of this mechanism, vancomycin is especially useful in treating infections where other antibiotics may not be effective due to resistance.
Vancomycin was originally derived from the bacterium Streptococcus orientalis and has been used in clinical practice for decades. It is commonly administered intravenously for systemic infections and is also available in oral formulations for specific gastrointestinal infections. Due to its effectiveness against resistant bacteria, vancomycin remains a critical therapy in hospitals and healthcare settings for managing serious gram-positive infections.
