Silver Sulfadiazine is an antibiotic medicine that helps your body fight infections caused by bacteria. It is used to prevent and treat infections of burn wounds. This medicine stops the bacteria from growing, which helps to resolve your symptoms.

Product Description:

Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antibacterial combining silver with a sulfonamide, and both components contribute. Silver ions are released slowly at the wound surface and disrupt bacterial cell membranes and DNA; the sulfonamide adds antibacterial activity of its own. It has broad activity including against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is the organism that most often complicates burn wounds.

Its established use is prophylaxis and treatment of infection in second and third degree burns, supplied as a 1% cream.

Practice has moved somewhat: silver sulfadiazine has been shown to delay wound healing and to make wound assessment difficult by forming a pseudo-eschar, and modern burn units increasingly prefer silver-impregnated dressings. It nonetheless remains widely used, particularly where those dressings are unaffordable.

Sourcing notes. Three cautions belong in the labelling: contraindication in sulfonamide allergy; caution in G6PD deficiency, where haemolysis may occur; and avoidance near term in pregnancy and in neonates because of kernicterus risk. Silver sulfadiazine appears on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines and carries substantial burn-unit and disaster-relief procurement volume. Manufacture is topical semisolid capability; the cream is light-sensitive and darkens on exposure, which affects packaging specification.
