Dalbavancin is a lipoglycopeptide, related to vancomycin and teicoplanin but distinguished by an exceptionally long half-time — around two weeks — which permits a complete course as a single dose, or as two doses a week apart. That is a genuine change in how a skin infection can be treated: a patient who would otherwise need admission for intravenous therapy, or a peripherally inserted central catheter for outpatient administration, can be treated with one infusion and discharged.
