Medroxyprogesterone acetate similar to the progesterone hormone naturally produced by the body. It helps in regulating the periods, stop irregular bleeding, and for withdrawal bleeding in case of amenorrhea (unusual stopping of menstrual periods).

Product Description:

Medroxyprogesterone acetate injectable suspension is a long-acting progestin contraceptive. A single intramuscular dose suppresses the pituitary release of gonadotropins, preventing ovulation, while also thickening cervical mucus and thinning the endometrium. The microcrystalline suspension releases drug slowly, giving contraceptive cover for about thirteen weeks from one injection.

It is used for contraception, and in some markets for endometriosis and certain cancers at different doses. Its advantages are effectiveness independent of daily adherence, suitability for women who cannot take oestrogen, and privacy. Its drawbacks are equally clear: bleeding pattern changes are universal, with irregular spotting early and amenorrhoea in most women by a year; return of fertility is delayed, averaging several months beyond the injection interval; and it causes a loss of bone mineral density that largely recovers after stopping but has led regulators to advise reviewing long-term use, particularly in adolescents. Weight gain is reported.
