Product Description:

Cetrorelix is a synthetic decapeptide that blocks gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptors in the pituitary. Blockade is immediate and competitive: unlike GnRH agonists, which first cause a surge of hormone release before suppressing it over about two weeks, an antagonist switches off luteinising hormone release within hours.

That speed is its purpose in fertility treatment. During ovarian stimulation for IVF, the growing follicles raise oestrogen, which can trigger a premature LH surge and release the eggs before they can be collected. Cetrorelix is started mid-stimulation and prevents that surge, allowing egg collection to be timed precisely. Because suppression is rapid and reversible, antagonist protocols are shorter, need less gonadotropin, and carry a markedly lower risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome than agonist protocols, since ovulation can be triggered with a GnRH agonist instead of hCG. Injection site reactions are the main adverse effect.
