Product Description:
Dipyridamole is an antiplatelet and vasodilator medication belonging to the nucleoside transport inhibitor and phosphodiesterase-3 (PDE3) inhibitor class. Marketed under the brand name Persantine, it is used to reduce the risk of blood clot formation during long-term therapy and to induce vasodilation when administered at higher doses over a short duration. Dipyridamole works by increasing intracellular cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels, which inhibits platelet aggregation and promotes relaxation of vascular smooth muscle.
Clinically, dipyridamole is used to improve blood flow in patients with peripheral arterial disease and coronary artery disease. It has also been shown to lower pulmonary hypertension without causing a significant reduction in systemic blood pressure. Additionally, dipyridamole inhibits smooth muscle cell proliferation and may improve patency of synthetic arteriovenous hemodialysis grafts.
Dipyridamole is widely used as a pharmacologic stress agent during myocardial perfusion imaging for patients who are unable to undergo exercise-based stress testing. Beyond its cardiovascular effects, it has demonstrated antiviral activity by inhibiting the replication of certain viral RNA, including mengovirus. Dipyridamole is available in oral and injectable formulations and is prescribed under medical supervision.
