Product Description:
Ethacrynate sodium is the sodium salt form of ethacrynic acid, a potent loop diuretic belonging to the aryloxyacetic acid class. Structurally, it is an unsaturated ketone derivative that does not contain a sulfonamide substituent, making it a suitable option for patients who are intolerant or allergic to sulfonamide-based diuretics. Ethacrynate sodium exerts its diuretic effect by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle, resulting in increased excretion of water and electrolytes and rapid reduction of fluid overload.
Pharmacokinetically, ethacrynic acid is extensively bound to plasma proteins following administration. Both the unchanged drug and its metabolites are eliminated through biliary and renal pathways, with excretion occurring in bile and urine. Due to its strong diuretic action and potential for electrolyte disturbances, ethacrynate sodium is typically used in hospital or closely monitored clinical settings.
Ethacrynate sodium is indicated for the management of severe edema associated with conditions such as congestive heart failure, renal impairment, and hepatic disease, particularly when alternative loop diuretics are contraindicated.
