Product Description:
Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic used in the management of hypertension and edematous states associated with conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disorders. It is commonly prescribed in combination with thiazide diuretics to enhance diuretic efficacy while minimizing potassium loss. One of the most widely used fixed-dose combinations is hydrochlorothiazide/triamterene, which provides effective blood pressure control and fluid reduction with a balanced electrolyte profile. Triamterene is marketed under brand names such as Dyrenium and Dytac in different regions.
Pharmacologically, triamterene acts by inhibiting epithelial sodium channels in the distal renal tubules, leading to increased sodium and water excretion while conserving potassium. This mechanism makes it particularly valuable for patients at risk of hypokalemia during diuretic therapy. Triamterene is indicated for the treatment of edema and as an adjunct in hypertension management, especially in patients requiring potassium-sparing effects.
