Carica papaya leaf extract is a standardised extract of papaya leaves, supplied as tablets and widely used in India and parts of South-East Asia in dengue fever, where platelet counts fall and patients are monitored for bleeding. Laboratory work suggests the extract influences platelet production and membrane stability, and small clinical studies have reported faster recovery of platelet counts than with supportive care alone.

The evidence has real limits. Most trials are small, open-label and conducted in single countries, and platelet count is a laboratory measure rather than an outcome such as bleeding, hospital stay or death, which have not been shown to improve. Dengue management still rests on careful fluid balance and monitoring for warning signs, and nothing about this product changes that. It is generally well tolerated; mild gastrointestinal upset is reported.

In India it is registered as a medicine with an approved specification, while elsewhere it would usually fall under botanical or supplement rules, and claims about dengue are restricted in most regulated markets.
