Product Description:

Icatibant is a synthetic decapeptide that blocks the bradykinin B2 receptor. In hereditary angioedema, a deficiency or dysfunction of C1 inhibitor lets the contact pathway run unchecked, generating bradykinin, which binds B2 receptors on blood vessel walls and makes them leak — the immediate cause of swelling attacks. Icatibant occupies the receptor so that bradykinin cannot act, which stops an attack that is already under way.

It is used for acute attacks in adults and children aged two and over, given as a single subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, repeatable after six hours if needed. Patients can be trained to self-administer, which matters because laryngeal attacks are life-threatening and early treatment shortens them. Because it acts on the receptor rather than on C1 inhibitor, it works regardless of the underlying defect. Injection site reactions — pain, swelling and redness — are almost universal and settle within hours. It does not prevent attacks.
