Aluminum chloride is a topical astringent used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of the axillae, hands, and feet. It works by blocking sweat ducts, thereby reducing sweat production and controlling odor. Available in 20% solutions or roll-on formulations, it is applied to clean, dry skin, typically once daily at night. It is commonly used for both mild and severe cases of excessive sweating.

Product Description:

Aluminium chloride hexahydrate at 20% is the standard topical treatment for excessive sweating. It works physically rather than pharmacologically: the aluminium ions react with mucopolysaccharides in the sweat duct to form a plug that blocks the duct near the skin surface, and there is evidence it also causes atrophy of the secretory cells with continued use.

It is used for hyperhidrosis of the underarms, palms and soles, applied at night to completely dry skin and washed off in the morning — dryness matters, because contact with water produces hydrochloric acid, which is what causes the characteristic stinging and irritation. Frequency is reduced to once or twice weekly once sweating is controlled. Irritation is the main reason patients stop; applying to dry skin, washing off promptly and taking short breaks all help. It should not be applied to broken or freshly shaved skin. Where it fails, the next steps are iontophoresis, anticholinergics or botulinum toxin.

Sourcing notes. Formulation matters more than the active: the vehicle, usually anhydrous ethanol, and whether a buffering or irritation-reducing agent is included, are what distinguish products. Roll-on, solution and spray presentations are separate registrations, and classification varies between medicine and cosmetic by market.
