Crotamiton is a topical antipruritic and scabicidal agent used to treat scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei infection) and itching (pruritus). It works by killing mites and relieving irritation caused by infestations. Applied directly to the skin, it provides dual action — both anti-parasitic and soothing effects for itching and irritation.

Product Description:

Crotamiton has two claimed actions: it kills scabies mites and it relieves itch. The scabicidal mechanism has never been fully established, and its cure rates are lower than permethrin or oral ivermectin, so it is not first-line for scabies in most guidelines. Its antipruritic effect, also not fully explained, is what keeps it in use.

It is used for scabies, and more commonly as a general antipruritic for itch from eczema, insect bites, allergic dermatitis and post-scabetic itch — the itch that continues for weeks after the mites have been killed, which patients often mistake for treatment failure. For scabies it is applied to the whole body below the neck and repeated daily for several days. It should not be applied to acutely inflamed, weeping or raw skin, and it is avoided near the eyes and mucous membranes. Contact dermatitis occurs occasionally. Use in infants and in pregnancy follows local guidance, as data are limited.

Sourcing notes. Off patent and inexpensive. Cream and lotion are separate presentations, the lotion being more practical for whole-body application. Registration varies and it has been discontinued in some markets. Scabies demand is concentrated in institutional and public-health programmes, where permethrin and ivermectin are the usual first choices.
