Product Description:

Amcinonide is a potent topical corticosteroid — US class 2 to 3, European class III — meaning it is substantially stronger than hydrocortisone but below the superpotent group. It binds glucocorticoid receptors in skin cells and suppresses the transcription of inflammatory mediators, reducing the redness, scaling, thickening and itch of inflammatory dermatoses.

It is used for moderate to severe eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis and lichen planus, on trunk and limb skin rather than on the face or flexures, where a potent steroid causes atrophy quickly. It is applied thinly two or three times daily for a defined course, then stepped down to a weaker preparation. The risks are dose, site and duration dependent: skin thinning, stretch marks, telangiectasia, easy bruising, folliculitis and, on large areas or under occlusion, enough systemic absorption to suppress the adrenal axis, particularly in children. Tachyphylaxis with continued use is why treatment is intermittent.

Sourcing notes. Cream, ointment and lotion are three separate registrations, and the vehicle changes both cosmetic acceptability and effective potency. The originator brand has been discontinued in several markets, leaving generic supply, so confirm registration in the destination country.
