Product Description:

Polymyxin B is a polypeptide antibiotic that binds the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and breaks it open. It is closely related to colistin (polymyxin E), but it is given in its active form rather than as a prodrug, so blood levels are reached faster and are more predictable. For that reason many intensive care units prefer it for bloodstream and lung infections caused by carbapenem-resistant organisms.

It is used for serious infections caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae, often in combination with another antibiotic. Kidney function and nerve side effects need close monitoring. Each vial contains 500,000 international units, equal to 50 mg of polymyxin B.
