Product Description:
Ceftolozane is a cephalosporin designed to resist the defence mechanisms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, one of the hardest hospital bacteria to treat. Tazobactam is added to block many extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. Together they often remain active against Pseudomonas strains that are resistant to carbapenems, piperacillin-tazobactam and ceftazidime.
It is approved for complicated urinary tract infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections (with metronidazole) and hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia. It is given by intravenous infusion every eight hours; the pneumonia dose is double the standard dose. It does not cover carbapenemase-producing bacteria, so susceptibility testing guides its use.
Sourcing notes. Ceftolozane-tazobactam is protected by patents in major markets and is supplied by the originator. Hospitals in countries where it is not registered can often import it through named-patient or special-access routes. Ceftazidime-avibactam and meropenem-vaborbactam are also listed on PharmaTradz.
