Roxithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat infections such as infections of the chest, tonsils, skin or genitals. It works by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria (bugs). Like all antibiotics, roxithromycin is not effective against infections caused by viruses.

Product Description:

Roxithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide derived from erythromycin, with improved acid stability and better oral bioavailability. Its spectrum covers respiratory pathogens including the atypicals — Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Legionella — which makes it a common choice in community-acquired respiratory infection where atypical cover is wanted.

It is supplied as 150 and 300 mg tablets, dosed once or twice daily, and is better tolerated gastrointestinally than erythromycin, which is its principal advantage over the parent compound.

Macrolides as a class carry QT prolongation potential and interact with drugs metabolised by CYP3A4, though roxithromycin's interaction profile is milder than erythromycin's or clarithromycin's.

Sourcing notes. Roxithromycin has a distinctly regional footprint. It is used across Europe, Australia, India and much of Asia, but has never been approved in the United States — a fact that surprises buyers accustomed to treating macrolides as interchangeable. Registration precedent therefore governs which markets are realistic. WHO classifies macrolides under Watch. Where the requirement is macrolide cover rather than roxithromycin specifically, azithromycin and clarithromycin have far wider registration and supply.
