Azlocillin Sodium is a semisynthetic acylureidopenicillin, a subclass of β-lactam antibiotics. It is structurally related to ampicillin, piperacillin, and mezlocillin, and is specifically designed to combat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria.

Product Description:

Azlocillin is a ureidopenicillin, an extended-spectrum penicillin developed principally for activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Its spectrum resembles that of piperacillin, though it is less potent against Enterobacteriaceae. It is supplied as powder for injection at 500 mg, 1 g and 1.5 g.

Azlocillin has been largely superseded in clinical practice by piperacillin-tazobactam, which combines a broader spectrum with beta-lactamase inhibition, and it has been withdrawn from several major markets. Where it remains in use, its role is anti-pseudomonal therapy in settings where the newer combinations are unavailable or unaffordable.

Sourcing notes. The practical consequence of that displacement is limited: few current manufacturers, few active registrations, and thin dossier availability. Where a buyer specifies azlocillin, establish whether the requirement is genuinely for this molecule or whether the underlying need is anti-pseudomonal cover — in which case piperacillin-tazobactam has far wider availability, better evidence and comparable cost. Where azlocillin is genuinely required, expect longer lead times and fewer sources than the penicillin class would normally suggest. Manufacture requires sterile powder-filling approval at the specific site.
