Product Description:
Meropenem-vaborbactam pairs the carbapenem meropenem with vaborbactam, a boronic-acid beta-lactamase inhibitor. Vaborbactam is especially effective against the KPC carbapenemase, the enzyme behind many outbreaks of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. With vaborbactam present, meropenem regains its activity against these bacteria.
It is approved for complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis, and in the EU also for complicated intra-abdominal infections, hospital-acquired pneumonia and other infections with limited options. Each 2 g dose (1 g meropenem plus 1 g vaborbactam) is infused over three hours every eight hours. It is not active against metallo-beta-lactamases (NDM, VIM) or OXA-48.
Sourcing notes. Meropenem-vaborbactam is patented and supplied by the originator companies. It sits in the WHO AWaRe Reserve group. Hospitals outside its registered markets can usually import it through named-patient routes. Plain meropenem injection is also listed on PharmaTradz.
