Clorazepate is a benzodiazepine prodrug. It is inactive as given, and stomach acid converts it to nordazepam, the active compound, which has a long half-life measured in days. That long action gives smooth, sustained effect without the peaks and troughs of shorter benzodiazepines, and it makes withdrawal less abrupt — but it also means accumulation over days of dosing, especially in older patients and in liver impairment.

It is used for anxiety disorders, as an adjunct in partial seizures, and for acute alcohol withdrawal, where long-acting benzodiazepines are preferred because their gradual decline provides a self-tapering effect. Because conversion needs gastric acid, proton pump inhibitors and antacids can reduce how much active drug is produced. The class cautions apply: sedation, falls in older people, tolerance and dependence with continued use, seizures on abrupt withdrawal, and additive respiratory depression with opioids and alcohol.

Sourcing notes. Clorazepate is a Schedule IV psychotropic under the 1971 UN Convention, requiring import and export authorisations and national quota. Registration is broad across Europe and the Americas. Tablets and capsules are separate presentations, and the dipotassium salt is hygroscopic, so moisture-protective packaging is part of the specification.
