Cefradine is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and bone infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death.

Product Description:

Cefradine (cephradine) is a first-generation oral cephalosporin with activity against streptococci and methicillin-susceptible staphylococci and modest Gram-negative cover. Its spectrum and clinical role are essentially those of cefalexin, to which it is closely related structurally, and it is used in skin and soft tissue infection, pharyngitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infection.

It is supplied as 250 and 500 mg capsules and tablets.

Cefradine has lost ground steadily to cefalexin, which offers the same spectrum with better established supply and wider registration. It has been discontinued in a number of markets, and its remaining use is concentrated in South Asia, the Middle East and parts of Latin America.

Sourcing notes. WHO classifies first-generation cephalosporins of this type under Access, which supports their position in essential medicines procurement. But confirm registration status in the destination market specifically rather than assuming, because cefradine's footprint is narrower than the class as a whole. Where a buyer's requirement is a first-generation oral cephalosporin rather than cefradine by name, cefalexin will almost always be faster to register, easier to source and no more expensive.
