Artesunate is a fast-acting antimalarial drug from the artemisinin class, used for the treatment of severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It works by rapidly killing parasites in the blood, reducing disease severity and preventing complications. Artesunate is available as intravenous injections, oral tablets, and rectal suppositories, often used in combination therapies to improve efficacy and prevent resistance.

Product Description:

Artesunate is a water-soluble artemisinin derivative and the fastest-acting antimalarial available. It kills parasites across a wide range of their life cycle, including the young ring forms that older drugs miss, and it reduces the sequestration of infected red cells that drives severe disease. The large SEAQUAMAT and AQUAMAT trials showed it cut mortality in severe malaria substantially compared with quinine, in adults and children, which is why the World Health Organization recommends intravenous artesunate as first-line treatment for severe malaria worldwide.

It is given intravenously or intramuscularly at diagnosis and at set intervals, then followed by a full course of oral combination therapy once the patient can swallow, because monotherapy risks resistance. Delayed haemolytic anaemia can occur one to three weeks after treatment, particularly after high parasite loads, so haemoglobin is checked on follow-up. The vial requires reconstitution with the supplied bicarbonate solution and must be used promptly.
