Product Description:

Zopiclone is a cyclopyrrolone hypnotic, one of the "Z-drugs". Although chemically unrelated to benzodiazepines, it acts at the same benzodiazepine binding site on the GABA-A receptor. With a half-life of about five hours it helps with both falling asleep and staying asleep, and it has less residual next-day effect than long-acting benzodiazepines, though driving impairment the following morning is still documented at the standard dose.

It is licensed for short-term treatment of insomnia, typically up to four weeks including the taper. A bitter or metallic taste is the characteristic adverse effect. Tolerance, dependence and rebound insomnia occur as with benzodiazepines. Complex sleep behaviours — sleep-walking, sleep-driving, eating while not fully awake — carry regulatory warnings. The dose is halved in older adults and in hepatic impairment, and additive depression with opioids and alcohol applies.

Sourcing notes. Zopiclone is controlled nationally in many markets — for example Class C in the UK — although it is not listed under the 1971 UN Convention, so permit requirements differ by country and must be checked for both source and destination. It is not registered in the US, where eszopiclone, the active enantiomer, is sold instead. Generic tablets are widely available and inexpensive. Demand is concentrated in Europe, Canada, Australia and parts of Asia.
