Product Description:

Ulipristal acetate is a selective progesterone receptor modulator: it binds the progesterone receptor and acts as an antagonist or partial agonist depending on the tissue. At the 30 mg dose it works as emergency contraception, chiefly by delaying or preventing ovulation — and, unlike levonorgestrel, it remains effective even after luteinising hormone has begun to rise, which is the period when the risk of conception is highest.

It is used as a single tablet as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, and remains effective for up to five days, compared with three for levonorgestrel. It is more effective than levonorgestrel overall, and particularly in women with a higher body weight. It is not an abortifacient: it does not disrupt an established pregnancy. Because both act on the progesterone receptor, a hormonal contraceptive started too soon afterwards can reduce its effect, so guidance specifies a wait of five days. Headache, nausea and abdominal pain are the common adverse effects, and the next period may be early or late.

Sourcing notes. Over the counter in some markets and prescription-only in others, which changes the whole distribution route. A separate 5 mg ulipristal product for uterine fibroids was restricted and then withdrawn in the EU over serious liver injury — a different product that should not be confused with this one.
