Travoprost is a prostaglandin F2α analog used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor in the eye. It is prescribed for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Product Description:

Travoprost is a prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue, given as an isopropyl ester prodrug that corneal esterases convert to the active acid. It increases uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humour and, to a lesser extent, trabecular outflow, lowering intraocular pressure by around thirty percent from one evening drop — the efficacy and dosing convenience that make this class first-line for open-angle glaucoma.

It is used once daily in the evening for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. The class effects apply: permanent iris pigmentation in mixed-colour eyes, darkening of eyelid skin, longer and darker lashes, prostaglandin-associated periorbitopathy with long use, and conjunctival hyperaemia, which is more frequent with travoprost than with latanoprost. Patients should be told about the irreversible pigment changes before starting. Caution applies in active intraocular inflammation and after complicated cataract surgery because of a small risk of macular oedema.

Sourcing notes. Off patent. One presentation replaced benzalkonium chloride with an alternative preservative system that is gentler on the ocular surface, and preservative-free unit doses exist — this is the main point of differentiation between sources, and it matters because glaucoma patients use drops for decades. Unlike latanoprost, travoprost is stored at room temperature.
