Levobunolol is a non‑selective beta‑adrenergic blocking agent (beta‑blocker) used to lower intraocular pressure in conditions like glaucoma or ocular hypertension. When applied as eye drops, it decreases production of aqueous humor in the eye, helping to reduce pressure and prevent optic nerve damage. It is generally administered as 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s), often once or twice daily, under ophthalmologist supervision.

Product Description:

Levobunolol is a non-selective beta-blocker eye drop. Blocking beta receptors on the ciliary epithelium reduces the production of aqueous humour, lowering intraocular pressure by roughly a quarter. Its active metabolite, dihydrolevobunolol, is itself a potent beta-blocker with a long duration, which is why once-daily dosing works for many patients where other beta-blockers need twice-daily use.

It is used once or twice daily for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, alone or with a prostaglandin analogue or carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. Its efficacy is comparable to timolol. The class risk is systemic: drops drain through the nasolacrimal duct into the nasal mucosa and are absorbed directly into the circulation, avoiding first-pass metabolism, so a topical dose can have real cardiac and respiratory effects. It is contraindicated in asthma, severe COPD, sinus bradycardia, second and third degree heart block and uncompensated heart failure, and it masks the warning signs of hypoglycaemia in diabetes.
