Product Description:
Pilocarpine is a naturally occurring lactone alkaloid originally extracted from plants of the Pilocarpus genus. In pharmaceutical use, pilocarpine hydrochloride is widely utilized to reduce intraocular pressure and manage conditions related to glaucoma and dry mouth. As an ophthalmic solution, pilocarpine is used in the short-term management of angle-closure glaucoma prior to surgical intervention, as well as in ocular hypertension and primary open-angle glaucoma. It is also administered to constrict the pupil following diagnostic dilation procedures.
The onset of action for pilocarpine eye drops typically occurs within one hour, with therapeutic effects lasting up to 24 hours. Due to its cholinergic side effects, its use in long-term glaucoma management has become less common, but it remains clinically valuable in specific situations.
When administered orally, pilocarpine is effective in treating dry mouth associated with Sjögren’s syndrome or as a result of radiation therapy to the head and neck. Its ability to stimulate salivary secretion makes it an important therapeutic option in supportive care.
