Thioridazine is used in the treatment of schizophrenia. It alters the thoughts and elevates the mood, improving the person’s ability to think, feel and behave.

Product Description:

Thioridazine is a phenothiazine antipsychotic that blocks dopamine D2 receptors along with muscarinic, alpha-adrenergic and histamine receptors. Its strong anticholinergic activity partly masks the extrapyramidal effects that other typical antipsychotics cause, which for years made it appear better tolerated than it was.

It was used for schizophrenia and for behavioural disturbance. Its position changed when its cardiac effects were quantified: thioridazine prolongs the QT interval more than almost any other antipsychotic, in a dose-dependent way, with a corresponding risk of torsades de pointes and sudden death. Regulators responded with boxed warnings and restriction to patients who had failed other antipsychotics with ECG monitoring, and the originator withdrew it in the US and several other markets. It also causes retinal pigmentation at high doses, which can permanently impair vision. Where it is still available it is reserved for treatment-resistant cases under monitoring.
