Trihexyphenidyl is a prescription medicine used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and drug induced abnormal movements. It helps by improving muscle control and reducing the stiffness of the muscle, so that they can move easily.

Product Description:

Trihexyphenidyl is a centrally acting antimuscarinic. In the striatum, dopamine and acetylcholine act in balance; when dopamine signalling falls — in Parkinson's disease — or is blocked by an antipsychotic, cholinergic activity dominates and produces tremor and rigidity. Blocking muscarinic receptors restores the balance.

Its main use today is drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms: the parkinsonism, acute dystonia and tremor caused by antipsychotics, where it works quickly and is widely used alongside first-generation agents. In idiopathic Parkinson's disease it has largely been superseded by levodopa and dopamine agonists, but it retains a place in younger patients whose dominant symptom is tremor. It does not help, and may worsen, tardive dyskinesia — a common prescribing error. Anticholinergic effects limit the dose: dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, and in older patients confusion and memory impairment, which is why it is avoided in the elderly where possible. It is also misused for its euphoriant effects in some settings.
