Product Description:

Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant with exceptionally strong histamine H1 blocking activity — stronger than any classical antihistamine. At a 3 mg dose it is not acting as an antidepressant: at that level it is essentially a selective H1 antagonist, which promotes sleep maintenance without meaningful anticholinergic, adrenergic or serotonergic effects. Antidepressant doses are ten to a hundred times higher.

Low-dose doxepin is used for insomnia characterised by difficulty staying asleep. Its advantage over benzodiazepines and Z-drugs is that it is not a controlled substance, does not cause dependence or tolerance, and has not been associated with the complex sleep behaviours those drugs carry warnings for. It works on sleep maintenance rather than sleep onset, so it is not the right choice for someone who cannot fall asleep. It is taken within thirty minutes of bedtime and not within three hours of a meal, since food delays and prolongs absorption, increasing next-day drowsiness.

Sourcing notes. The 3 mg and 6 mg insomnia tablets are a separate registration from doxepin capsules for depression, and the two must not be confused in a quotation. Low-dose tablets are registered mainly in the US. Content uniformity at 3 mg is the manufacturing challenge.
