Rabeprazole is a medicine which reduces the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux and problems in your oesophagus (which connects your throat to your stomach. It is also used to prevent and treat stomach ulcers.

Product Description:

Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It is converted in the acidic secretory canaliculi of parietal cells into an active form that binds covalently to the hydrogen-potassium ATPase, the final step in acid secretion. Because the binding is irreversible, acid suppression outlasts the drug's short plasma half-life until new pumps are made. Rabeprazole activates faster than other PPIs and depends less on CYP2C19 metabolism, so its effect varies less between patients.

The intravenous form is used when oral therapy is not possible — patients who are nil by mouth, critically ill patients at risk of stress ulcer bleeding, and after endoscopic treatment of bleeding peptic ulcer to reduce rebleeding. Patients switch to oral treatment as soon as they can. Adverse effects include headache, diarrhoea, and with prolonged use hypomagnesaemia, Clostridioides difficile infection and possibly fractures. It lowers absorption of drugs that need acid, such as some antifungals and antiretrovirals.

Sourcing notes. Intravenous rabeprazole is registered in China, India and some other Asian markets, but not in the US or EU, where intravenous pantoprazole and esomeprazole dominate. PPIs are unstable in acid, heat and light, so the product is a lyophilised powder reconstituted before use, and the reconstituted solution has a short stability window. Buyers should confirm local registration first.
