Silica in dimethicone increases the surface tension of the gas bubbles and allows these to come to the surface and eruct in a normal mechanism through the mouth. This is the only scientific anti blot treatment. It is life saving when the animal is in severe suffocation and discomfort because of entrapped gas.

Silica in dimethicone is simeticone: dimethicone, a silicone polymer, activated with finely divided silicon dioxide. The silica greatly enhances the antifoaming effect. It is not absorbed and works physically. By lowering the surface tension of gas bubbles trapped in gut contents, it lets small bubbles merge into larger ones that can be passed by belching or as flatus.

It is used for flatulence, bloating and wind, and the liquid form is widely given for infant colic, where it is well tolerated but controlled trials have not shown clear benefit over placebo. It is also given before endoscopy to improve the view by dispersing bubbles. Because it has no systemic absorption it is very safe, with no meaningful drug interactions beyond a possible reduction in levothyroxine absorption when taken together. It can be added to infant feeds or given from a dropper or spoon.

Sourcing notes. A low-cost commodity with many manufacturers. The specification should state the silicon dioxide content and the dimethicone viscosity grade, and name the pharmacopoeial simeticone monograph. For infant products, sugar content, preservatives and the absence of alcohol are frequently required by regulators and buyers.
