Methscopolamine bromide is an anticholinergic agent that works by blocking muscarinic receptors, leading to a decrease in stomach acid secretion and reduced GI motility. It is used primarily as adjunctive therapy in peptic ulcer disease and for relief of abdominal pain and cramps caused by gastrointestinal spasms. It may also be present in multi-ingredient cold/allergy combos. Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, and constipation.

Product Description:

Methscopolamine bromide is a quaternary ammonium derivative of scopolamine. The permanent positive charge means it crosses the blood-brain barrier very poorly, so it blocks peripheral muscarinic receptors — reducing gastric acid and salivary secretion and gut motility — without the drowsiness, confusion and amnesia associated with scopolamine itself. It is also poorly absorbed orally, which affects dosing consistency.

Its approved use is as an adjunct in peptic ulcer disease. Its own labelling notes that it has not been shown to speed ulcer healing, reduce recurrence or prevent complications, and proton pump inhibitors have effectively replaced it. It is used off label for reducing salivation and for rhinitis in combination cold products. Peripheral antimuscarinic effects are the adverse effects: dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention and tachycardia. It is contraindicated in glaucoma, obstructive uropathy, paralytic ileus and myasthenia gravis.

Sourcing notes. Essentially a US product, and registration elsewhere is rare. Buyers outside the US will usually be looking at named-patient supply, or at hyoscine butylbromide or glycopyrronium as locally registered alternatives with the same peripheral action. Generic tablets exist in the US. Demand is small and declining.
