Phenoxymethylpenicillin potassium is a narrow-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as streptococcal pharyngitis, tonsillitis, mild skin infections, and other susceptible infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.

Product Description:

Phenoxymethylpenicillin — penicillin V — is an acid-stable oral penicillin, and its acid stability is the whole point: unlike benzylpenicillin it survives gastric acid and can be given by mouth. Its spectrum is narrow, principally streptococci, and it remains first-line for streptococcal pharyngitis, for prophylaxis against rheumatic fever recurrence, and for pneumococcal prophylaxis in asplenia and sickle cell disease.

It is supplied as 250 and 500 mg tablets and as oral solution at 125 and 250 mg per 5 mL.

Group A streptococcus has never developed penicillin resistance, which is remarkable after eight decades of use and means penicillin V remains fully effective where broader agents have failed. Prescribing a broader antibiotic for streptococcal pharyngitis is a stewardship failure rather than a clinical upgrade.

Sourcing notes. WHO classifies it under Access and it appears on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, so demand through public and donor-funded procurement is substantial and stable. Note the naming: penicillin V, phenoxymethylpenicillin and Pen-VK all denote the same product, and tenders use all three.
